Alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) are naturally occurring acids and are the mildest of peel formulas used for the treatment of fine lines, areas of dryness, uneven pigmentation and acne. Such alpha hydroxy acid peels include glycolic acid and lactic acid. AHA peeks may cause stinging, skin redness, mild skin irritation, dryness and may take multiple treatment to achieve desired results.
Beta hydroxy acid (BHA) peels have the ability to penetrate deeper into the pore than AHA. Beta hydroxy acid peels control sebum production, acne and assist in removal of dead skin cells, examples include salicylic acid peels. Salicylic acid peels assist in peeling away sun-damaged skin cells, revealing a smooth and more radiant complexion. They can also be used to treat hyperpigmentation.
Jessner’s peel solution combines 14% salicylic acid, lactic acid and resorcinol in an ethanol base. These particular combination of powerful peeling agents results in deeper penetration into the epidermal layer of the skin.
Retinoic acid peels is a retinoid. This particular peel penetrates deeper than the beta hydroxy acid peels (such as Salicylic acid) and may be used to remove scars, as well as wrinkles and pigmentation problems, it can be performed with a Jessner’s peel.
TCA (trichloroacetic acid) peels are performed to more deeply exfoliate severely sun-damaged skin, assisting with resolution of brown spots and reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. TCA concentrations range from 20% to 50%. The depth of penetration is increased as the concentration strength is increased. This particular peel does require a few days of healing time, based on strength used and peel depth achieved.
To assist with maintaining long-term improvement, a daily program of skin products are available.
